General Education Requirements 33-34 Credits
- Up to 14 credits of prerequisite coursework may be required to satisfy GE and will count as elective credit.
- Students must complete a two-semester, beginning-level sequence or demonstrate proficiency in a language other than English or in American Sign Language. The second semester language also satisfies the GE foreign language requirement (0-6 cr.)
- General Education courses will not count toward Generalist Content.

Generalist Content: (minimum 15 cr.)
Teacher candidates must take one option from each of the following categories to address the content knowledge needs of a childhood education teacher. Courses must be in addition to courses used to fulfill General Education.
English Language Arts:
- ENG 363 - Children’s Literature (3 cr.) or
- Consult with an academic advisor to choose any course with an ENG prefix above 101 level. Courses with the language of “adolescence education” in the course title, course description, or course content do not qualify.

*Teacher candidates with an Arts Specialization with a Focus in Studio Art must take Art 137 or Art 139.
**One of these courses is required for candidates with an Arts Specialization and Music Focus.

Specialization Content: (minimum 15 cr. including 9 upper level credits)
Each teacher candidate must take a minimum 15 credits (including 9 credits at the 300 or 400 level) from one of the following Specialization Content areas, in addition to satisfying the Generalist Content requirements.
The Arts Specialization (Curr. 0280): (minimum 15 cr.)
For Music Focus: (18 cr.)
18 credits depending on candidate proficiencies for MUS 120 or MUS 283 or both, GE Courses, and Generalist Course selection.
Music Fundamentals: (9 cr.)

Note:
All teacher candidates are required to attend five musical performances presented or sponsored by the Music Department (a calendar of recitals/concerts will be available during the first week of each semester.

Teacher candidates can select courses across disciplines. Candidates must take 5 courses (or a minimum of 15 credits). A minimum of 9 credits must be at the 300 or 400 level.

*These courses fulfill the Upper Level Requirement.
Social Studies Specialization (Curr. 0284):
Teacher candidates can select courses across disciplines. Candidates must take 5 courses (or a minimum of 15 credits). A minimum of 9 credits must be at the 300 or 400 level.
Interdisciplinary Specialization (Curr. 0285):
Candidates must take one course in each of the five core areas (English Language Arts, Social Studies, Math, Science, The Arts) for a minimum of 15 credits. A minimum of 9 credits must be at the 300 or 400 level.
English Language Arts:
Choose one course from the English Language Arts Specialization.
Mathematics:
Choose one math course from the STEM Specialization.
The Arts:
Choose one course from the Arts Specialization.
Social Studies:
Choose one course from the Social Studies Specialization.
Science:
Choose one science course from the STEM Specialization.
Electives 0 Credits
Certain major/cognate courses may also satisfy GE requirements thus increase elective credits accordingly.

Additional Degree Requirements
- Students must have a 3.0 or higher cumulative GPA to become an Education Major.
- An overall GPA of 3.0 or higher and minimum grade of C in all major courses (Major Departmental Requirements) are required to continue in the program.
- Minimum grade of C in all cognate and concentration courses is required to continue in the program.
- Completion of a two-semester, beginning-level sequence or proficiency in a language other than English or in American Sign Language is required.
- Teacher candidates must successfully conduct themselves professionally at all times and demonstrate professional ethical behaviors.
- Teacher candidates not meeting one or more of these requirements will be reviewed by the Undergraduate Education Department Academic Progress Committee for possible dismissal from the major.
- A minimum overall GPA of 3.0 in all required major courses (Major Departmental Requirements).
- Completion of all college-wide degree requirements (Undergraduate Degree Requirements , General Education Program ).
