The Department of Political Science at SUNY Plattsburgh offers courses in American Politics, Comparative Politics, International Relations, Law, and Political theory. Political Science majors take introductory courses in all of these areas, plus advanced courses which allow them to specialize according to their interests. Law and Justice majors focus on Law and Political Theory and supplement their Political Science courses with a selection of courses from other departments. Many Political Science and Law and Justice majors complete internships as part of their studies. These can be with the local offices of elected representatives, political campaigns, local government offices, the NY State Assembly or Senate, or a wide variety of organizations and offices in Washington, D.C.

Students of political science gain an understanding of political activities, organizations, and ideals, and they develop an awareness of the relationship between social problems, decision-making, and public policies. Highly successful students are eligible for the national Political Science Honor Society. Recent political science graduates have begun careers in government, politics, education, and the private sector. Others have pursued advanced degrees in political science, public administration, education, business, and law.
