HIS 141 - Building America: African Americans in the United States (3 cr.) African Americans - both enslaved and free - are central to the foundation and progress of the United States. This course surveys the history of the United States through an African-American lens, from roots in African communities and the Middle Passage through slavery, emancipation, and the Reconstruction era. Emphasis is on the development of a unique African-American identity and the fight for human and civil rights across the period from 1619 - 1890.
