HIS 367 - Gender and Race in the History of Medicine in the United States (3 cr.)


This course explores how ideas about gender and race have impacted the development of the system of healthcare in the United States, from the early republic to the present.    The course also explores the experience of women and minorities in the American health care system.  Topics studied include medicine and slavery, changing norms of childbirth, the Tuskegee Syphilis Experiment, Public Health and Immigration, the Women’s Health movement, and medical views of same sex attraction.
