PHI 211 - Modern Self: Freedom, Rights, and Equality (3 cr.) Introduction to modern (1492-1804) European philosophical conceptions of self, freedom, rights, and equality. European philosophers often developed universal theories of a rational, autonomous self– usually assumed to be a white male. European societies practiced gender discrimination and racism, instituted modern slavery, and exported these practices and institutions to the Americas. Students will read canonical modern philosophers as we examine philosophy’s role in colonizing the Americas, practicing slavery, suppressing women, and in promoting political revolutions for freedom and equality.
