ART 137 - Western Art: Ancient and Medieval (3 cr.) This course surveys important developments in western art during Antiquity and the Middle Ages. It covers the visual arts and architecture of ancient Mesopotamia, Persia, and Egypt; Classical Greece and Rome; and the medieval period in western Europe and Byzantium. Particular emphasis is placed on architecture, freestanding and relief sculpture, fresco painting, and illuminated manuscripts.
