ENG 384 - Jane Austen (3 cr.) An examination of the six mature novels of Jane Austen by exploring Austen’s artistry, her historical context, and her timeless themes. Austen depicts domestic life with an awareness of the nearness of disaster. Her attention to the dangers facing young women, combined with her transformative attention to narrative technique forever changed the English novel. This course examines how her art advances her themes, including courtship, marriage, selfhood, foolishness, education, class, selfishness, self-improvement, self-realization, community, and the arts.
