ENG 321 - Gothic Texts (3 cr.) An exploration of Gothic texts and the conceptual work they allow in imaginatively exploring personal and cultural anxiety regarding the past. The English Gothic novel emerged during the eighteenth century as England struggled with its rejected Catholic past and explored new democratic modes of social construction. Topics include a repressed, haunting, or forbidden past, supernatural, ruins, relics, monastic structures, Machiavels, and the alien Other. Feminist uses of the Gothic will be explored.
