ENG 312 - Devils Rebels, and Angels: John Milton’s Paradise Lost (3 cr.) This course explores the England’s most famous and most complex epic, John Milton’s Paradise Lost, first published in ten books in 1667 and then revised into its current twelve-book format in 1674. Milton rewrites the origin story of Adam and Eve’s fall from Eden to account for the fallen condition of humanity. His psychological insight is both startling and demanding, not least because he focuses as much on the reader’s experience of reading the epic as he does on his characters.
We will read slowly, learning the conventions of epic and the devices of poetry as we proceed. Our focus throughout will be on Milton’s interest in choice. We will also confront the theological and historical contexts of the epic. The goal is to read Milton’s famous poem with both pleasure and understanding.
