General Education Requirements


Students must meet requirements for general education; see The Cardinal Core Curriculum  for details. Certain courses that fulfill major or cognate requirements may also apply to general education.

Major Departmental Requirements 68 Credits


Core Courses: (33 Credits)


Art Studio Concentration: (18 Credits)


Six courses in one studio area.  One of these courses (3 cr.) may be taken in another area, with the permission of the concentration faculty.  Studio concentration should be declared after completion of core courses (foundation and breadth) or at the beginning of the junior year.  Acceptance in a studio concentration requires the approval of the concentration faculty.

 

Art Studio Electives: (9 Credits)


Three additional courses in any studio area beyond the foundation, breadth, and concentration.

Junior-Level Portfolio Review: (0 Credit)


ART 397  Required in the spring semester of the junior year of all art majors with 57 or more total credits.

Advanced Writing Requirement: (3 Credits)


Electives 19-20


Certain major/cognate courses may also satisfy GE requirements thus increase elective credits accordingly.

Total Credits minimum 120


Additional Degree Requirements


  1. A minimum overall GPA of 3.0 in all ART courses.
  2. A minimum grade of C in all ART courses.
  3. Students will be admitted to the B.F.A. program on the basis of a portfolio review.  New freshmen and transfer students must submit an acceptable portfolio to the art faculty.  See the Art Department website for specific requirements and instruction.  Additionally, freshmen must include a letter of reference from a high school counselor or teacher.  The portfolio may be submitted prior to or immediately after being accepted to the college. 
  4. Transfer students must complete the studio concentration (18 cr.) and the AWR ART 471 Contemporary Art or ART 475 Art of the Book at SUNY Plattsburgh.
  5. Transfer students will receive art major credit for art courses whose content is equivalent to SUNY Plattsburgh ART courses, and for which a grade of C or higher was awarded. 
  6. AP credits in Art Studio or in Art History will be accepted as electives only.
  7. Completion of all Undergraduate Degree Requirements.
