ENG 321 - Gothic Novel (3 cr.)

This course introduces students to the Gothic novel, a genre that emerged during the eighteenth century in England. The class introduces students to the historical and aesthetic forces shaping the Gothic’s treatment of anxiety toward the past represented by the supernatural, by ruins and relics from pre-Reformation England, by Catholics, by monasteries and abbeys, by scheming Machiavels, and by the alien Other. Feminist uses of the Gothic will be explored.
