AST 330 - Skygazing: An Introduction to Backyard Astronomy (3 cr,) Curious about humanity’s allure for skygazing? Want to unleash your inner astronomer? This course will explore observational astronomy with emphasis on encouraging a foundational understanding of celestial objects and phenomena by employing naked-eye observing and astronomical instruments. Topics will include observing techniques, basic telescope operation, star and constellation identification, and cultural perceptions of astronomy and skylore. Students will have the opportunity to visit the Northcountry Planetarium, the Adirondack Public Observatory, and experience first-hand sky observations with regional astronomers. During the semester, there will be times outside of scheduled classroom sessions when students will be expected to participate in observing activities both on- and off-campus. Transportation will be provided, and scheduling will be as flexible as possible to accommodate other student commitments and visible celestial phenomena. Suitable for students with no prior astronomy experience. Everyone can do it - come look up with us! Liberal Arts Prerequisite(s): Completion of math competency requirement and Sophomore standing.
