EDU 5120 - Adolescent Development for Education Professionals (3 cr.) This course will provide a comprehensive understanding of the developmental processes adolescent students experience. The course will provide practical insights into supporting and fostering healthy development by addressing individual needs, challenges, and strengths. By integrating theories of human development, this course will provide strategies for creating supportive and effective learning environments that promote positive outcomes for adolescents. Students will examine the biological, psychological, and sociocultural factors that influence development and how these factors shape identity, relationships, and behavior. Topics include the role of family, peers, culture, and technology in adolescent development, as well as strategies to handle common issues such as motivation, mental health, peer pressure, and identity formation. This course meets SED mandates for the completion of The Dignity for All Students Act (DASA) (Education Law - Article 2), School Violence Prevention and Intervention (SAVE), instructing students for preventing child abduction and maltreatment (EDN §803a), as well as prevention of alcohol, tobacco, and drug abuse (substance abuse) (EDN §804), providing safety education as it pertains to highway safety, traffic regulations, and bicycle safety (EDN §806), and instructing students in fire and arson prevention (EDN §808). Prerequisite(s): Matriculated in M.S.T.
