EDR 524 - Literacy Instruction in the Content Areas in Grades 7-12 (3 cr.)

This course prepares preservice and in-service teachers to integrate evidence-based literacy practices into content-area instruction for grades 7-12. Students will explore both content literacy (general strategies to support reading, writing, speaking, and listening across subjects) and disciplinary literacy (the specialized ways experts in specific fields use language and text). Students will develop literacy-rich instructional strategies that foster motivation, engagement, and equity for all learners. Emphasis is placed on reading, writing, listening, and speaking to learn, and assessment-driven instruction. Through reflection, collaboration, and practice, participants will strengthen their professional literacy identities and leave prepared to foster students’ ability to read, write, and think critically within and across the disciplines.
