CRI 304 - Mental Health and the Criminal Justice System (3 cr.) This course provides knowledge into an understudied yet important aspect of criminal justice, which is how mental health affects crime and how criminal justice professionals are affected by those suffering from mental health disorders and co-occurring disorders. This course focuses on how specific mental health disorders are related to criminal behavior; common interactions between mentally ill offenders and emergency responders, probation and parole officers, correctional officers and other social workers; the stigmatization that exists for those suffering from mental health disorders; and policy solutions to address the needs of mentally ill offenders.
