NUR 428 - Management and Leadership (4 cr.)


This course addresses the professional role of the nurse as leader and manager within the healthcare environment.  Students examine selected management models as a basis for planning, organizing, staffing, directing, and controlling the provision of quality nursing care in a variety of health care settings.  Throughout the course, students participate in leadership seminars and explore the concepts of vision and creativity, leadership development, excellence, and complexity and change theory.  Emphasis is placed on ethical decision-making, critical thinking, problem solving, empowerment, and on the development of communication skills essential to working effectively with groups and organizations.  Students work with nurse managers/leaders to apply the principles of management and leadership in a practice setting. Students develop college-level proficiency in oral discourse through discussion, debate, review and reflection.  This course meets the requirements for oral expression.
Prerequisite(s): Senior level standing.
